She thought wrong.
Former friends have turned to enemies, causing more innocent lives
to get swept up into the dangerous world her parents created. Now it’s
up to Anastasia to stop the damage before anyone else gets hurt—or worse. She embarks on a treacherous trail from Poland to Prague,
and old rivals emerge at every turn. But when the final confrontation
occurs, will she be too late to protect the ones she loves… or even
herself?

Excerpt:
“I wasn’t psychic, I didn’t have prophetic dreams of the future
or believe in crystal balls, but that feeling people get when the
phone rings and they know who’s on the other line without
looking and they know it’s bad news. I believed in that. I’d felt
it before—when my sister stood outside my bedroom
door the night we thought our parents died.
I felt that way now.”
The world of … (World Building)
By Diana Rodriguez Wallach, author of End of the Lie, book
three in the Anastasia Phoenix series.
Being a published author comes with some perks, like using
your creative passion, working from home, and scheduling your
own hours. But one of the often overlooked gems of the writing
profession is research, and I don’t mean sifting through Google
results or dusting off microfiche (does that still exist?). I mean
setting the scene. Whether your story is based on planet Zoltar
or Main Street, New Hampshire your reader needs to be able to
smell the air, see the sights, and taste the food. The Anastasia
Phoenix trilogy is set both abroad and in the U.S, so my research
included a lot of globetrotting.
As a YA author, I’m writing for teens who may not have ever left
their towns let alone their countries. So if I’m going to set stories
abroad, I need to create vivid descriptions that allow my readers
to feel like they are there with Anastasia. For example, in Proof
of Lies, the first book of the series, Anastasia fights for her life on a
dangerous cliff outside the city walls of Cortona, Italy, and you can
bet I stood on that exact perilous edge. When Anastasia takes a
water taxi in Venice, I can authentically describe the spray on her
face because it felt the same way on my cheeks. In book two, Lies
that Bind, I can portray the smoke and noise of Bonfire Night in
Lewes, England, because I stood freezing in that crowd. When
Anastasia and Marcus dance at a sultry wedding in Rio de Janeiro,
Brazil, it’s based on my personal experience. In End of the Lie,
which is out now, Anastasia stumbles upon a unique Wet Monday
celebration the day after Easter in Poland, and these events depict
exactly what happened to me while I was there. I’ve also traveled to
Prague twice, and I always knew the foggy mist off the Vltava River
is exactly where I wanted to end the series.
My settings are real, vivid, and accurate, because I experienced every
tiny detail—like knowing that the hotel elevators in Europe
have a Floor 0 instead of “G” for ground, or that the motorbikes in
Rome zip around cars like bees, or that the seasons in Brazil are the
opposite of what they are in the States, or that Easter in Poland is as
frigid as a winter in the Northeast. I wouldn’t have known these details
if I hadn’t traveled to Europe and wandered the streets, absorbing the culture.
So while traveling for book research is admittedly expensive, it helps
enhance the world of Anastasia Phoenix, and I hope it allows readers to
escape into these exotic destinations so fully they research airfare before
they hit the last page.
