A Treason of Thorns by Laura E. Weymouth
Publisher: HarperTeen
Release Date: September 10th 2019
Genre: Young Adult, Fantasy

Synopsis:

Violet Sterling has spent the last seven years in exile, longing to return to Burleigh House. One of the six great houses of England, Burleigh’s magic always kept the countryside well. And as a child, this magic kept Violet happy, draping her in flowers while she slept, fashioning secret hiding places for her, and lighting fires on the coldest nights to keep her warm.

Everything shattered, though, when her father committed high treason trying to free Burleigh from the king’s oppressive control. He was killed, and Vi was forced into hiding.

When she’s given a chance to go back, she discovers Burleigh has run wild with grief. Vines and briars are crumbling the walls. Magic that once enriched the surrounding countryside has turned dark and deadly, twisting lush blooms into thorns, poisoning livestock and destroying crops. Burleigh’s very soul is crying out in pain.

Vi would do anything to help, and soon she finds herself walking the same deadly path as her father all those years before. Vi must decide how far she’s willing to go to save her house—before her house destroys everything she’s ever known.

Violet Sterling spent her childhood living at Burleigh House, one of the magical houses of England. Violet loved her time at Burleigh, and Burleigh loved her in return. But when Violet’s father, the Caretaker of Burleigh House, was charged with treason for attempting to find the deed to Burleigh House to free it from the king’s control, everything was ruined – Violet was forced to leave, and her father left to die, confined at Burleigh House.
Years later, Violet can finally go back home, but Burleigh is not as she left it – run-down and with its magic slowly poisoning the countryside, Burleigh is in pain, unable to channel its magic in the right way.
Violet has always said she will do anything for Burleigh House, but will she change her mind?
Can Violet save Burleigh and everyone she loves?

The blurb for A Treason of Thorns really intrigued me – I loved the idea of magical houses – and I’m glad that I read it.
Violet was a good protagonist. Her love for Burleigh House was understandable having grown up there, and it must have been so devastating to see what Burleigh had become in Violet’s absence.
I also liked Wyn and really liked Esperanza and Alfred, especially their interactions as they were so sweet together.
The plot was good and held my attention. There weren’t particularly any unexpected big twists, but I was still interested.
I liked that there was Jewish representation.
There were a couple of things that bugged me, but they were only little things.
I really loved the concept of magical houses that could effect the countryside. It was fairytale-like in a way, but could also be very creepy. I would definitely read a book about any of the other houses, especially the ones in other parts of Europe, like Italy or France. I think it would be interesting.
The writing style was easy to follow and I would definitely consider reading more books by the author.

Overall, this was an enjoyable read that I would recommend.
